Mycology – Serology

Different techniques such as IFA, EIA, ELISA and Western Blot offer the possibility to diagnose a very large number of pathogenic factors responsible for both endemic and very rare diseases.

Serological tests have gained importance in mycology due to the speed of results and these tests can serve as a prognostic indicator. Serological methods make use of the reactions and properties of the serum. The serological tests are done to detect antigen or antibody in serum or body fluids of suspected fungal infection.

The specific immune response resulting from exposure to cell wall, cytoplasmic or extracellular fungal antigen during infection can be used for diagnosis. By monitoring this response, the prognosis of the disease and the outcome of the therapy can be determined.
